Chapter 9: The Battle with the Goblins

There were six goblins in this group, and they failed to notice Kael, who had only stealthily peeked out with a pair of eyes.

These goblins were stark naked, except for the leader, who wore a necklace crafted from braided grass stems around his neck.

The necklace was adorned with several messy bird feathers, which made it stand out among the group.

It was evident that this goblin held the position of the head within the gang.

Each goblin in the group clutched a weapon, all of which were long spears nearly two meters in length.

The spearheads appeared to be hewn from sharp stones, giving them a menacing look.

The spear shafts, though not perfectly straight, had these sharp stones firmly lashed with grass ropes, forming their crude yet functional weapons.

Judging by their primitive weaponry, it was clear that their civilization level was rather low, and it was reasonable to assume that this goblin tribe wasn''t very large.

As the goblins ambled along, they hollered and whooped loudly, which left Kael utterly perplexed.

Given their lackluster combat capabilities, weren''t they worried about attracting dangerous predators?

The goblins intermittently brandished their stone spears, banged on the walls, and let out ear-piercing shouts.

They chattered in a goblin dialect that was completely unintelligible to Kael, and occasionally, they even erupted into raucous laughter.

While they were on the move, the group of goblins suddenly split up and entered several buildings in pairs.

This unexpected action sent a shiver of foreboding down Kael''s spine. Why on earth were they going into the buildings?

Kael swiftly grabbed the fire axe and fastened a dagger around his waist, his eyes fixed intently on the goblins'' every move.

After about ten minutes, one group of goblins emerged from the building, carrying several items in their hands.

Kael squinted and took a closer look.

To his surprise, they had an iron pot and some odds and ends. Were these goblins scavenging for supplies? Kael couldn''t help but wonder.

Shortly after, the other two groups of goblins also came out of the buildings, each holding varying amounts of items.

Then, after depositing their loot, the goblins dispersed once again and randomly entered other buildings.

This turn of events filled Kael with a sense of dread.

He silently prayed, hoping fervently that these goblins wouldn''t set foot in the building he was in, let alone his room.

    Unfortunately, his prayers went unanswered.

One group of goblins emerged from the opposite building, empty-handed and muttering curses as they marched straight into Kael''s building.

This sight made Kael''s heart sink, as he had been closely monitoring their every step.

He had no desire for any unforeseen complications.

Now that he had successfully awakened his spirit, received a blessing from the Spirit Realm, and even had an attribute panel that he was yet to fully understand, all he wanted was a smooth journey back to Blue Star.

Once there, he envisioned himself quickly rising through the ranks to become a powerful spellcaster, a figure of great influence and promise.

But fate had other plans, and these two goblins were steadily approaching.

A single goblin wasn''t overly formidable.

Standing at just around 1.2 to 1.3 meters tall, their combat prowess was roughly on par with that of an eleven or twelve-year-old child. However, their savagery was a different story altogether.

Those with experience in combat knew the old adage well: the timid cower before the aggressive, the aggressive are daunted by the reckless, and the reckless fear those who have nothing to lose.

These goblins, bolstered by their numerical advantage, had the audacity of the reckless.

If he had a choice, Kael would have avoided this confrontation at all costs.

But as fate would have it, despite his earnest prayers, the two goblins drew nearer.

As he listened to the goblins'' unintelligible chatter growing louder, Kael''s initial nervousness gradually gave way to a steely resolve.

When faced with this imminent threat, he knew that his only option was to fight with everything he had.

Although fear coursed through his veins, he refused to back down.

After all, he was tall and robust, and he was confident that he could handle a goblin.

If he could just dispatch these two goblins first, dealing with the remaining four would be a much easier task.

Kael crouched behind the door, his right hand gripping the fire axe firmly.

The fire axe felt like an extension of his arm, and with his enhanced strength after the spirit awakening, he was ready to strike.

In his left hand, he held the dagger in a reverse grip, patiently waiting for the goblins to enter.

The door was blocked by a dilapidated sofa that Kael had positioned there, but it proved to be no obstacle for the determined goblins.

With a powerful shove, they pushed the wooden sofa aside, causing the fabric to tear and sending a cloud of debris and dust into the air.

The goblins coughed and spluttered, their voices muffled by the dust.

As the goblins'' chatter grew louder, they first opened the other two rooms. It seemed they had stumbled upon the skeleton, and they lingered there for a brief moment.

    “Creak~”

The door in front of Kael slowly opened, and a pungent stench of unwashed bodies wafted into the air. Kael held his breath, his heart pounding in his chest.

    “Gobble-de-gook!”

The two goblins spotted Kael''s backpack, along with the food and tools piled in the corner of the room, and they let out excited yells.

At that moment, Kael, who had been hiding in the shadows, crept out silently.

The two goblins stood with their backs to him.

One goblin held a bundle of sundries scavenged from the other rooms, and on his head, he even sported the top bone of the skull from the neighboring room.

The other goblin brandished a stone spear, and they were engaged in a heated argument.

A fierce look flashed across Kael''s face.

He raised the fire axe high above his head and then brought it down with a powerful swing, aiming for the goblin holding the stone spear.

The axe blade, sharpened to a keen edge, sliced through the goblin''s flesh with ease, aided by Kael''s tremendous strength.

    “Crack!”

The goblin let out a blood-curdling scream as its green blood spurted out.

It crumpled to the ground, lifeless.

The other goblin stood there, stunned, unable to comprehend what had just happened.

Seizing the opportunity, Kael wrenched the fire axe free from the goblin''s bone.

The sudden movement jolted the stunned goblin back to reality, and it let out a terrified scream. But Kael showed no mercy.

He raised the axe once more and brought it down with all his might.

    The goblin shrieked in terror.

With no weapon in its hand, it instinctively raised the sundries it was holding, trying to shield itself from the blow.

But Kael''s powerful strike was too much for the puny goblin to withstand.

    “Smack!”

The axe, along with the sundries, slammed into the goblin''s body. Miraculously, the goblin managed to survive, thanks to the makeshift shield.

Kael lifted the axe and delivered a powerful kick, sending the goblin flying onto the wooden bed.

Before the goblin could scramble to its feet, Kael leaped forward and brought the axe down on its forehead.

The goblin''s skull shattered, and its brain matter mixed with green blood splattered across the room. It was clear that the goblin was dead.

    “Whew~ Whew~”

Kael gasped for breath, his chest heaving.

Although he had emerged victorious from the battle, the adrenaline rush had left him feeling weak and exhausted.

As someone with no prior combat experience, the sudden release of tension made his entire body feel like jelly.

This was the harsh reality of inexperience. No amount of training could prepare him for the intensity of a real fight.

Despite his regular combat training with his classmates at school, this was the first time he had ever shed blood.

The only other times he had dealt with blood were when he had slaughtered fish and chickens in a restaurant.

This battle had been a baptism of fire, intense and unforgettable.
