Chapter 2 - The Great Labyrinth (Part 1).

Outside the tunnel, Jack was faced with a large, large open cave room. It was vast, with stalagmites scattered across the ground and long, large stalactites hanging from the ceiling above – some of them looking like they were about to fall down and crash into the ground at any given moment.

“The place is larger than I had thought..” Jack commented to himself in his mind, before turning his gaze down again. There were loud noises coming from in front of him, sounding like distorted grunts and groans, with the occasional banging on what he could only guess were stone on stone. Jack sharpened his gaze, smirking lightly. “Sounds like there is something forward. I suppose it’s worth checking it out.”

Jack began to march towards the noises, making sure to approach as quietly and carefully as he could – making sure to not make too much noise, so as not to alert whatever was making the noises.

As he got closer and closer, he noticed a small wooden club on the ground – slightly stained with what looked like blood. Carefully moving over, he kneeled in front of the club, carefully picking it up.

    [ WEAPON ]

    Scrap Club (Goblin)

    Rank: F

A club made from rough, weakened wood – carved hastily, it has little strength and may break at any given time.

    [ WEAPON ]

“Definitely nothing useful to me. The brackets say ‘Goblin’, so I assume this piece of junk was made by one.” Jack thought to himself, placing the club to the side before standing back up. From what he could remember from his childhood, in most stories and games, Goblins weren’t particularly strong creatures — often being placed up together with ‘beginner’ level enemies.

He carefully peaked around the corner, a camp standing just around the corner. The fireplace was made up from what looked like wood and bones and around it were many small green creatures – Goblins.

“Small green critters? If those aren’t goblins, then I have no idea what is.” He commented in his mind, before he shed a slight sweat. He wasn’t nervous, just confused. The creatures didn’t appear to possess any meaningful level of intelligence, so how had they managed to not only build but also light an entire campfire. A loud shout came from above, causing all the goblins around the fire to quickly stop what they were doing and rush to get into what looked a lot like a military formation, before kneeling. Then, on top of a large boulder, which was almost like a small cliff, a slightly taller goblin came out. This one, though just as skinny as the others, had longer limbs, a cloak which was clearly oversized for its small body and a staff in its right hand.

There was a hood over the creature''s head, hiding most of its face, only allowing for piercing red eyes to shine through the darkness located inside the hood. Jack shed a sweat – that goblin clearly wasn’t like the rest. It seemed to be of a much higher intelligence and also the ‘leader’ of the pathetic goblins that had formed into columns like they were soldiers.

    [ CREATURE ]

    Goblin Sorcerer (Novice)

    Rank: G

    Level: 4 (2)

A Goblin that has managed to learn the ways of magic. They are much smarter than the average goblin and are able to cast spells with little to no incantations – however, due to being a novice, this Goblins spells aren’t too strong.

    [ CREATURE ]

A sudden window appeared in front of Jack as he sharply eyed the cloak wearing Goblin. “So the thing is a Sorcerer? That sounds like trouble..” Jack sighed, before putting on a confident grin and shaking his head. Despite the rank being higher than his and the goblins level also being higher, he wasn’t particularly worried about losing here.

As long as he managed to get in close before the Goblin managed to fire off even a single spell, he was golden. Looking at the sheathed dagger in his hand, he began to brainstorm ideas for how to approach the situation – rushing in like a hothead most likely wouldn’t work and if that Goblin managed to get off even a single spell against him, he may be done for. Examining his surroundings, he noticed a group of hanging stalactites directly above the Goblin Sorcerer.

“Isn’t that oddly convenient. If I can get those stalactites to fall, I could use them as a distraction to get close to the Sorcerer first.” Jack pondered. The Goblins seemed to be having some sort of meeting, with the Sorcerer that stood above them all beginning some kind of ‘speech’ made up from grunts and impossible to understand noises.

Taking in a small breath, Jack unsheathed the dagger, before holding it by its blade and glaring at the stalactites above. A clean hit to their base should do the trick – or at least, that was what he thought.

Placing his left leg to the side, and preparing for the throw, Jack took in a deep breath, before tossing the dagger with so much power that the weapon launched at the stalactites with immense speed — Jack shed a slight sweat - was he always that physically strong?

Then, a window appeared in front of him.

    [ NOTIFICATION ]

    [Combat Experience] has been activated.

Due to your experience on the battlefield, your physical attributes have been permanently boosted by +20%

    [ NOTIFICATION ]

    Jack smirked.

“That definitely will prove to be useful.” He thought to himself, as the dagger he had thrown crashed into the stalactites. Within the next few moments, the rocks shook lightly, before all of them came crashing down on the Goblins, the dagger also falling down. The Goblin Sorcerer who had been in the middle of its ‘speech’ looked up at the falling stalactites, before quickly flipping around and running — right as the stalactites hit the ground and kicked up a large cloud of dust, as well as sent a ringing echo of destruction through the cave.

The Goblins had dispersed, confused. Some of them had been crushed under the rock that had just fallen on them while others were furious now. Jack grinned before dashing out of his hiding spot and towards where the Sorcerer had run off to earlier. Now was his chance.

With the dust cloud covering him, he grabbed the dagger that was laying on the ground before leaping up onto the cliff like rock that the Sorcerer had stood upon. From there, he spotted the elusive green creature – coughing as it rose to its feet. The Goblin looked around confused, however before it had any time to react, Jack leapt at it with the dagger tightly gripped in his hands. Once he had closed the distance, he plunged the weapon into the goblins neck, causing the green creature to start flailing and attempting to call for help, as it got pinned to the ground and lost its staff.

Blood spewed from its neck, while Jack simply pushed the dagger deeper and deeper into it, with the goblin looking at him with a terrified gaze. To it, Jack looked dark – pitch black. The only thing piercing that pitch black darkness, was a pair of shining, deep orange eyes — which almost felt like they were gazing straight into the goblins soul.

The creature flailed for a bit longer, before Jack twisted the dagger and then using his right foot, kicked the Goblins head off of its body – blood going everywhere as the head flew away and hit the wall. Jack picked the dagger up and rose back up to his feet.

“So it really is like a game from my childhood… Guess that shitty woman calling herself a ‘Saint’ wasn’t lying.” Jack exhaled lightly as growling came from behind him. After having slew the Goblin Sorcerer, the surviving goblins had cornered him – armed with weapons that were shabby and low quality – like the club he had found earlier.

Jack turned to face them all, counting up the amount of enemies still remaining.

“Fourteen left… When I initially saw them, there were twenty six, not counting the Sorcerer, so I guess twelve were caught in the falling stalactites.” He then grinned before looking at the goblins like prey. While he knew better than anyone to never underestimate an opponent, he also was someone who could recognise when he had the advantage.

None of these goblins were impressive – F-rank was the highest among them, and even then, they barely outlevelled him. The Goblin Sorcerer, the one who would have been real trouble, was already dead.

Which meant that the rest of these green critters were nothing more than perhaps slight inconveniences. “Come on, I’ve taken on more men than this and come out on top – I can take a few goblins slightly taller than toddlers.” Jack said with a mocking, confident tone while gripping the Black Iron Dagger in his right hand. The Goblins let out a collective battle cry, before all charging at Jack at once.

Jack stood in place, letting the goblins get closer, before swinging the dagger at them – slashing in half around five of the fourteen goblins. “My strength really is greater than it was before being summoned,” Jack''s grin turned a bit sinister. “I am not complaining.”

In rapid succession, the man easily tore through the goblins before him, taking them all out with the dagger he held.

After the goblins were slaughtered, nothing but their dark green blood staining the floor and walls as well as their mutilated corpses remained. Jack cleaned off some of the blood on his face, before exhaling.

“It has been a while since I’ve felt like I could move like that. My body feels lighter and my movements sharper — it feels like I have regained my youthfulness again.” He commented to himself in his mind, before exhaling and looking slightly down.

“Seems like every time I level up, I gain ‘Stat points’ which I assume I can place into any stat of my choosing to raise it,” Jack commented to himself in his mind, while deciding on how to distribute his points. “Strength is going to be useful, but only throwing everything into strength will make my stats really unbalanced. I better go for a more balanced spread – perhaps giving Strength and Agility the most weight right now.”

After deliberating for a moment longer, he exhaled and inputted his stat points – four into Strength, four into Agility, three into Defence, three into Health and two into Magical Energy. Once the stat points were distributed across the stats in what Jack believed to be the most ‘balanced’ spread given his current state — that being, not having much need for Magical Energy as he doesn’t know how to use any magic yet — Jack examined his decision intently.

“Seems like one stat point increases a particular stat by ten. That should be easy enough to remember,” Jack then sighed, looking at Magical Energy a bit confused. “But Magical Energy increases by fifty for every stat point… I guess it is easier to grow then?” Jack shook his head. After he finished, he closed the status window, before walking over to the beheaded corpse of the Goblin Sorcerer, kneeling down in front of it and picking up the scabbard he had accidentally dropped earlier, sheathing the dagger back up.

“Feels a bit convenient how this dagger does more damage to Goblins and Orcs, and the first enemies I happen to face are a bunch of goblins.. However, I will not complain. It certainly made for an easy way to quickly gain some levels.” Jack clipped the sheathed dagger onto his belt, before looking at the beheaded Goblin corpse. The oversized cloak that it wore was still in basically pristine condition, even after he had lunged at the thing and stabbed it with a weapon.

Grabbing it and picking it up a bit, he examined it a bit closer, before a sudden information window appeared.

“Interesting… Overlooking the rank, it seems like this will prove useful.” Jack grabbed the cloak a bit more tightly, before ripping it off of the goblins dead body and putting it on himself. While it felt a bit itchy, the cloak itself proved to be mostly comfortable and even fit him perfectly. He could also ever so slightly feel the boost he had gained to his Agility stat from the cloak, which was a pleasant feeling.

“I should keep moving. All these corpses will surely attract some unwanted guests with time.” Jack commented, before beginning to march forth, leaving behind the scene of massacre that he had caused and beginning his journey deeper into this cave.

    …

“I should have probably left at least one goblin alive to test my ‘Taming’ skill on it… And my clothes – they’re all stained with blood. What a shame… These were my favourite as well.”

    In the Capital — Roria.

Saint Alicia led the students through the luxurious halls of the castle they were in, the view out the windows being breathtaking. In the distance were mountains, with the sun radiating its shine down at them, creating this almost ‘glowing’ outline to the mountains. The students were all whispering among themselves, many still unable to believe that they had really been brought to a different world.

Aihara, the girl who had first stood up for Jack - trying to argue against the ‘Saintess’, looked a lot less excited compared to most of her classmates. She looked frightened, worried — concerned. “Everything okay?” The boy with the black hair asked, walking beside her. Aihara looked at him with her emerald eyes, before exhaling and shaking her head.

“I’m not sure.” She replied, looking away. “I guess I just feel bad… We tried to stand up for the mister, however in the end, we proved useless.” Aihara sighed lightly. The black haired boy stared at her for a moment, before exhaling and lightly patting her on the back, confusing the young girl as she looked at him surprised.

“Don’t sweat it. What matters is that we didn’t stand around and tried to help – unlike everyone else who just stood around and did nothing.” The boy stated, his tone turning sharp part way through before he threw a daring glare at a trio of students who were throwing their gazes back at them. Seeing his glare, they freaked out and quickly looked away — shiver running down their spine. Aihara remained silent for a bit, before looking away from the boy. He was right – at least they tried to stand up unlike the others…

It really wasn’t like they could have actually done anything to change the situation in any way at all. They weren’t strong in any way and the woman did not look like she’d hesitate to send them to wherever the man had been sent, had he not spoken up and demanded to leave them out of it.

“Besides,” The boy spoke up, a cheerful smile across his face. “He’ll stay alive. He looked tough – like someone who knew what they were doing. Have some faith.” Aihara was a bit lost for words.

Though, yes, Jack was a stranger and someone they did not know at all, he was brought here in the same fashion as the rest of them, only to be treated horribly because of something he could not have chosen. Aihara exhaled, smiling lightly before looking at the black haired boy with a more cheerful expression. “You’re right.” She looked away with a smile.

The students followed after Alicia for a bit longer – eventually, they were brought into a large, large hall, where the ceiling was at least twenty meters above their heads. There were many, many guards – lined up and armed. At the end of the hall was a large throne, above which were banners that hang from the tall ceiling, on the banners three different scenes were shown of three different individuals — a man in a cloak, a woman in a golden veil dress and another man – this one in demonic armour.

At the throne, two individuals stood beside it – on the left was a young man, dressed luxuriously and very clearly someone from nobility. On the right, was a young woman, dressed in a stunning, red dress with a diadem on her long, flowing and smooth ruby red hair. In the throne itself, sat an elderly man – The King.

The man was dressed in robes, under which was a set of what appeared to be heavy armour. The man had a large beard, which was tied together like a vikings and his hair was short and grey – showing some whitening as well. Though he was very clearly old, the man''s physique was nothing short of impressive, looking like a man who had trained his entire life.

The students and Alicia all kneeled before the man, before Alicia lifted her head up to look at him. “Your Majesty, I have brought all of the summoned heroes.” She spoke up, her tone once again gentle and soft, like it had been when the students had arrived here for the first time.

The King remained silent in his throne – simply gazing at the students as if examining them all from his throne. After a bit, he closed his eyes and let out a sigh, before leaning back into his throne a bit. “Thank you Saint Alicia. You may move to the side.”

“Sire.” Alicia stood back up, throwing a gaze back at the students before opening her blood red eyes slightly and daringly looking at the four students that had stood up for Jack — as if warning them to remain silent about what had happened, before closing her eyes again and walking to the side. Then, the King''s attention fell onto the students, as he gestured to them all to stand up. “Please, raise your heads.”

The students, though hesitant at first, one by one stood back up and looked at the King. The way he sat on the throne displayed his sheer authority in this place — his appearance, his presence, his voice, his aura… All of it was that of a man, who held absolute power and someone none of them could speak out against. After a brief moment of silence, the King stood up.

“I am King Zect de Volcarn. I welcome you all to the Kingdom of Roria, travelers that have been summoned here from another world.” The King''s voice carried a certain weight to it. It was easy to tell that it belonged to a man who was wise. A man who had his job as a King — however, despite that, somehow still managed to be humble. That humbleness came into full view then, when the King suddenly moved down and over to the students, before kneeling before them – surprising the students, and even the two individuals beside his throne.

“Father! What are you—” The King lifted up his hand, to shut up the boy. “I apologise deeply for bringing you all here without any notice, however we had no other choice. Our world is on the brink of being overtaken by a force of evil, so we were forced to resort to drastic measures. Up front, before anything, I promise to all of you that no matter what, after you help us, we will send you back to your world.” The students were still puzzled and perplexed, while the King looked at them with honesty. His voice bore no ill will and had no hint of malice to it – everything he was saying felt like it was coming straight from the man''s heart… no, straight from the man''s soul.

Aihara didn’t know what to interpret from the situation — the King of the place they had been summoned to was kneeling before them and apologising… She had never heard of a monarch or individual in power ever doing something like that.

After the King finished, he stood back up and moved back over to his throne, sitting back down it and facing the students with a fierce gaze once more. “Now, as for the other matters, I will explain to you all the situation, so that you may understand a bit better why we resorted to summoning you all in the first place.”

After taking a deep breath, the King began to explain everything that had led them to make the decision they made to the students, the Students, having mixed reactions to it. Some listened, others didn’t – some felt bored, others excited. There was no middle ground. Aihara was one of those that listened intently to every single one of the King''s words – wishing to understand the reason behind this bizarre situation of theirs.

    [ ALERT ]

The announcement window appeared as Jack pulled the dagger out of a black wolf''s corpse. He had been wandering for a while, not encountering any enemies for the majority of it – until stumbling upon a small group of Black Wolves - G-rank monsters.

Despite being a whole rank higher than him and having the advantage in numbers, Jack had managed to outsmart the group and tear through them, turning what would have usually been a death sentence for anyone else in his situation into another one sided slaughter.

“Four more stat points… Guess I''ll put one stat point to every stat apart from Magical Energy.” Jack thought, before distributing his stat points across Health, Strength, Defence and Agility. He tossed the blood on the dagger off of the blade, before sheathing it back up and moving past the wolf corpses. Once again, he had gotten a bit heated and completely forgot to keep one of the wolves alive to try out ‘Taming’ on it.

He exhaled lightly in slight disappointment in himself. “Next monster I see, I’ll immediately try out using ‘Taming’ on it.” Jack thought, before moving forward and leaving the dead wolf bodies behind. Moving through the cave, Jack kept his eyes wide open – keeping himself completely aware of his surroundings at all times. “I wonder how long I have been moving through here by now… It feels like it has been hours. Alone in a place like a cave really makes you realise how easy it is to lose track of time when you can’t check the clock.”

    Jack sighed.

While he kept moving forward, a dark shadow watched him from above, skittering away across the stone floor with insect-like movement. Jack stopped. Something suddenly felt… off. It felt like he was being watched.

After a bit, a sudden web flew towards him at high speed. Jack quickly unsheathed his dagger and sliced apart the incoming web, before dashing towards where the web had come from. He examined the area carefully, eventually spotting the creature that had launched the attack – a silverish spider creature, whose body was built kind of armour. The spider had bright red eyes which shined under the cover of shadows that fell onto it.

“Perfect. It looks like there is only one of them – I can try ‘Taming’ on it.” Jack thought, dashing towards it and leaping up into the air. The spider let out a shriek, before skittering away – running as the man landed on the cliff it had stood at moments prior — watching the arachnid run off into the darkness.

“What a cowardly little critter.” Jack scuffed before calmly walking after the creature. The dark shadows it had run off into really made it hard to see – however the man kept moving forward, his other senses sharp — listening out for any sort of cues that an attack may be incoming. After a bit, he heard a sudden hiss, before flipping around and launching the dagger in his hand at where the hiss had come from. When the dagger hit its target, a loud screech echoed through the cave, followed by a thud, as if something hit the ground.

Jack chuckled, walking over to the critter before reaching into his trousers pocket and taking out a lighter that he had. “I had forgotten that I had this for a moment.” Jack commented, flipping it open and striking a flame on it, gently illuminating the scene. The earlier silverish spider was on the ground, trembling in fear while the dagger that Jack had thrown was inside one of its armour like legs. He looked at the creature with a small smirk.

    [ CREATURE ]

    Armoured White Tarantula (Juvenile)

    Rank: G

    Level: 12 (2)

A small and young member of the White Tarantula species. This specimen belongs to the ‘Armoured’ subclass of the species, having tough and hard to penetrate outer layers to their bodies – with only small gaps with softer skin that would allow for any real damage to be done to it.

    [ CREATURE ]

“Yeah, you’ll do just fine as a test.” He stated, before sharpening his eyes on it. The critter seemed to be too afraid to try anything at this stage, so he didn’t have to worry about it suddenly lashing out – now the only thing he needed to figure out is how to use the ‘Taming’ skill.

While pondering, the spider hissed lightly at him, its body shaking as it tried to move back and away from Jack. The man exhaled, walking closer to the creature before grabbing a hold of his dagger and pulling it out of its leg, causing the creature to shriek in pain – however not try attacking Jack. Instead, it backed up looking at him with a terrified expression.

Then, a window appeared in front of Jack.

    [ ALERT ]

    Skill ‘Taming’ can be used.

    [ ALERT ]

Jack exhaled lightly. “Would have been useful if you told me how..” As Jack thought this, the windows information changed.

    [ TUTORIAL ]

Would you like to initiate the ‘Taming’ tutorial?

    [ TUTORIAL ]

“I take it back. Thank you oh so dear system.” Jack smiled, before approving. The window closed before a new one appeared with instructions. The window at first talked about how the class ‘Tamer’ is able to ‘tame’ any monster that the individual encounters.

It cannot be used to tame beings that are classified as ‘Humanoid’ or ‘Undead’. Once a creature is tamed, they’ll be able to grow more powerful by earning levels just like the user, however unlike the user, the creature will be forced through evolutions in order to rank up to new ranks – while a creatures evolution is underway, they cannot assist the Tamer in battle until the evolution finishes.

If a tamed creature dies – the Tamer will be able to bring it back to life only once within the first five minutes of the tamed creature''s demise. If it is not brought back to life by the Tamer within five minutes of its demise, the creature will remain permanently dead.

“Not too difficult to understand, I suppose,” Jack commented, before scrolling to the next page of the Tutorial window, which contained just the information he needed - how to use his ‘Taming’ skill. “Here we go.”

The window said that all the Tamer needed to do is extend his hand towards the creature he wanted to tame, before thinking about and ‘channeling’ the desire for the creature to listen to it. If the creature accepts the ‘Tamer’ as its master, the taming process will be successful – if the creature rejects the ‘Tamer’ as its master, the taming will be a failure. A creature can be attempted to be tamed once, after which the creature cannot be tamed – with the exception of ‘Forced taming’, where the creature doesn’t get to reject the Tamer as its master and is tamed with an almost one hundred percent success rate.

However, a creature tamed using this method will grow and evolve at a slower rate and will not be able to be revived should it die.

Jack read through everything the tutorial window said, exhaling lightly afterwards before closing it and looking at the spider. “I guess it’s better to just try and see what happens.” Jack extended his right hand towards the creature, before taking in a light breath and closing his eyes for a moment. The arachnid watched him with anticipation and anxiety – trying to figure out whether the man would attack it or not.

After a bit, Jack opened his eyes again – the eyes shining a bright orange colour.

“Tame.” A rotating, orange magic circle appeared in Jack''s right hand palm, before an exact duplicate appeared below the spider. The critter fell into a panic, before trying to leap out of it, however being stopped by its injured leg. The magic circles spun slowly, while orange chains shot from the one in Jacks palm and enclosed the spider – creating a sort of cylindrical wall around it from the chains.

The spider looked even more distressed and scared, shivering in fear as the chains got closer to it. Once the chains reached its body, they gently adjusted themselves to the spider''s body shape, before fusing into its body and making it glow orange for a second. Then, the magic circles disappeared – replaced by a window appearing in front of Jack.

Jack smirked lightly, while shedding a light sweat. “Bloody hell, it actually worked. I didn’t expect that.” The spider that had just been tamed looked at Jack, before approaching him and looking at him similarly to a puppy – eyes wide. Jack looked back down at it with a thoughtful gaze.

“Its level seems to have been reset to one after being tamed and its injury seems to have been healed as well. I guess there are side effects to being tamed.” The man then looked at the ‘Nameless’ thing in the window. Was he able to give the creature a name? If so, what should he call it?

Kneeling down before it, he reached his right hand out to it – the spider looking at it curiously for a second, before rubbing its head against it, causing Jack to smile a bit. “Oddly enough, it’s kind of cute.” The man chuckled. Even at his age, he had a bit of a soft side for things that looked small and cute – mainly, animals. He himself had a small dog that he had gotten after retiring from mercenary work and he absolutely loved it.

Looking at the spider, oddly enough, sort of reminded him of the dog.

“What should I name you…” He brainstormed, thinking of all sorts of different names he could give the small critter.

“How about, Araneida? Does that sound good to you little guy?” The spider looked at Jack with an excited look, letting out small shrieks of joy – clearly very much liking the name. Jack chuckled.

“Then it’s settled, your name shall be Araneida.”

Jack exhaled lightly, before standing up and closing the window with Araneidas stats. Before he got to do anything else however, a sudden announcement window appeared in front of him, which caught his attention almost immediately.

    [ ALERT ]

Tamed creature ‘Araneida’ has successfully recognised you as its master.

Unique Skill [Spiders Venom] has been gifted.

Venom & Poison Resistance has been acquired.

    [ ALERT ]

“I gained a skill from taming Araneida? Now that’s interesting.” Jack commented in his mind. It seemed like that ‘Tamers’ were able to gain special abilities from the creatures they tamed – which definitely made him a bit more intrigued about his class. If he could gain more skills by taming creatures, then perhaps he should be on the lookout for more creatures to tame.

The man closed the alert window, before looking at Araneida, who was looking up at him with an excited look. “Come on, let’s keep moving.” The spider gave Jack an approving nod, before the two of them set out, with Jack extinguishing the flame created by his lighter and closing it up.
