Ch2 The ashes of yesterday- 2

For months, scientists and the military tried to analyze the two unidentified objects in our orbit. They sent rockets into moon orbit, but they could not get close to the golden glimmering person. While the golden one remained stationary, the green one was the worrying one.

Ever so slowly it began its descent into the core of earth. Conspiracy theories, Propaganda, and even religious beliefs swarmed all media outlets with explanations and doomsday scenarios. Even the space probes Humanity launched hadn''t provided insights into what it was.

The world turned on its head the moment it was discovered. Hardly anyone showed up to work anymore. While the Governments of the world told anyone to remain calm and continue as usual, no one believed it.

    --------------------------

    Days until the green-7

David a literal average man felt the same. While he didn''t belive any of the conspiracy theories he let his mind wander. David was an avid reader of fiction, so his mind always went to his special place, Magic.

While he didn''t wish for an apocalypse, he wished this little green ball that was traveling closer to Earth promised the scent of magic. He truly believed that 2 objects suddenly appearing in space had a certain magical flavor to them.

He truly felt as if things were going to change even his gut made it clear this feeling wasn''t going anywhere. With every passing day, the feelings of butterflies in his stomach grew. There was something about the mystery of it all.

The last week before the green balls'' arrival past the same way the months before did. David worked at a local Grocery or Super Market chain. His way to work had been a 30-minute drive before the appearance of the entities but ever since it only took him 20. Hardly anyone was driving anymore. Almost no one showed up to work so traffic was reduced to almost nothing.

David walked into his workplace, punched in, and took a look around. After he scanned the whole place he let out a big sigh. Mentally David started organizing his work day and he was lost deep in thought.

" Sure looks like were back during the big pandemic, huh?" His Boss Craig shocked him out of his mental gymnastics.

" Yeah man, the shelves are almost empty. Are we getting any deliveries in today bossman?" David replied as he slowly turned towards his boss.

His boss, as per usual, wore a nicer then he should button-down shirt with a slim-cut tie. Dress shoes with an almost mirror-like shine and a pressed line in his dress pants screamed that he was here to look good and not work. Craig was around 5 foot 10 inches and David was just a few inches taller than him.

" Who knows, with all this craziness going around?" Craig said as he walked off.

Naturally, Craig was right. David had experienced it all during the last months with him. Between the 70% of people being so frightened by the media that everyone bunkered down in their homes or shelters his country''s resources had become sparse.

Prices of course had increased significantly just before the green ball showed up due to corporate greed or the great depression as they called it. But they took on another high as delivery drivers and producers had problems even delivering anything to the many stores across the Nation.

David''s inner thoughts turned as he set out to his particular work area. While this wasn''t anyone''s dream job, it gave him enough money to scrape by. Currently he did it because he was always one of the first people in line to keep his fridge and pantry full.

While David wasn''t a '' we are all doomed '' kind of guy, he had stockpiled some nonperishables at home. ''Better to have a gun and not need it than needing it and not having one'' was a saying his Grandpa indoctrinated into him from an early age.

The work itself was mindless, so David''s inner thoughts turned to the books he was currently reading. With money tight, he turned his inner ramblings to his favorite website. A home of pure delight and artistry. Did you want to experience stories of intrigue and cunning, or might and power there was always something to find.

As David was lost in thoughts about magic, knights, beauties, and monsters, he saw a girl had walked up to him.

" Do y''all still have any gauze and witch hazel?" the girl said with a slightly southern tilt.

David turned his head towards her and took stock of her. Instantly he got annoyed. The girl barely was in her 20s, but wore makeup so thick the only way to describe it was excessive. Even her attire rang alarm bells in David''s mind. Booty shorts that exposed half of her cheeks, a sports bra that had absolutely no coverage. Not to mention long colored nails, most likely acrylic that kept drumming on her phone, and her long blond hair looked unblemished. Belly button pierced and many many tattoos.

" Let me go check Ma''am. " David replied lazily not even giving the Girl another glance.

'' I just don''t get the fashion sense of today. '' David thought as he rummaged through the limited product they had in their back room storing area. Luckily for the Girl David had found a whole box worth of gauze and some bottles of the witch hazel.

He brought them out for her and put them in her Cart, smiling a business-like smile.

" There ya go, that''s all we had in the back" David said.

" Neat, my name is Nessa by the way" Nessa replied while fidgeting with her phone. David felt as if he recognized what this was about. Not the first person to ask him for his phone number to get a leg up on any deliveries they had in the store.

" Names David" He said in an offhanded tone already turning around to continue his work. David didn''t like giving out his number anymore. While he was raised polite, he had experienced giving out his number during all this craziness. The numerous calls about the product and if he could reserve it for them were insanity. So a month into this madness he accepted any contact details were just for this purpose.

" Uhhh, well David I''ll better get goin then" Nessa said awkwardly clearly catching the rejection. To David, it almost felt like the girl was fleeing as he chuckled at the weird interraction.

David knew where he stood. Average was the only way to describe him. He wasn''t fit, but not fat either. His dark blond hair was kept short so maintenance on it wouldn''t take up too much time. While he was tall at 6 foot 2 and did go to the gym to help with his mental health, he never was the most athletic or the biggest at his local gym. His face was almost lost in a crowd, except for his piercing ice-blue eyes. The frown on his face never helped either. He kept his beard short, and his clothes clean, and he always smelled nice due to some cologne he put on himself every day.

Mindlessly David toiled away the rest of his shift and clocked out on time. There wasn''t much to do as no deliveries arrived that day. After he got to his car he sped off to the local gym and started as he called it quality time. Lifting weights helped him focus, his brain usually spun all over the place going from one exciting thing to the next. This usually meant Stories or books, but rarely even events that happened in the world around him.

He gently placed his weights down and took a swig of his water bottle. In front of him was a mirror, as most Gyms had adopted this mirror style in the free weights section, and he checked his arms. Sweat was glistening on his skin after his biceps curls. People were close to him but David ignored them. That was the polite thing to do, and he''d rather be caught dead than staring at the girls working out.

David saw a glint of blond out of the corner of his eyes while looking at himself. Nessa the girl that asked him for something at work. She was using a machine that was further in the back of the gym but David thought she was looking in his direction.

He put his headphones back on and picked his weights back up. His arms were shivering already which was a good sign. David loved going to failure on his sets, it just gave him that little bit of adrenaline rush at the end that sweetened the deal.

While he was working out he changed from free weights to other areas of the gym but there was always the presence of a head of blond hair near him. At all cost David wanted to avoid any interaction at the gym, he never lingered long in any area and as soon as he finished his workout of the day raced to the locker room.

After a quick shower and a change of clothes, he leisurely walked to his car. He had his headphones in while doing so but felt as if someone called out to him in the parking lot. David just shrugged it off and drove home.

His home was nothing special a two-bedroom apartment with the bare necessary decor and all the furniture he would need. He dropped his gym bag at the door and headed into the bedroom. David almost threw himself on his bed and pulled out his iPad.

'' Some stories updated, lucky me.'' He mused while proceeding to read. The rest of the day went by uneventfully.

    -----------------------------

    Days until the green-1

The arrival of the Green, as it would later be called by the leading cults of churches and scientists alike, was set to happen in a short couple of hours.

David had just finished his shift at work and was at the gym. While he couldn''t believe that the world was coming to an end, he was still wary of what might happen. The government tried to make it a secret, but the stationed military personnel in major cities told a story of riots, looting, and plundering.

While David truly believed such things to happen they were crimes of people scared beyond belief. No one was truly evil in his eyes.

As David was heading out of the locker rooms he peeked outside the window front of the gym. Green. The cars outside were green. Houses, windows, and even doors were all green. Streets as well as any signs and posts were green.

" Emergency Broadcast, Emergency Broadcast," The TVs set inside the gym started blaring. " The Unidentified Object heading towards Earth has expanded in size. Seek immediate Shelter and await further Notice." The robotic voice intoned.

David ran to the windows and looked up.

" What is this?" David shouted in resignation. " It''s like we have two suns ...."

While it looked as such for just a second the ''sun'' that was green began to rapidly expand in size. Closer and closer it grew as it approached earth''s crust.

" Impact in 5,4,3....." The robotic voice of the emergency broadcast kicked back to life.

David had to shield his eyes from the ever more blinding light, but just two short seconds later he felt it. A slight tremor as if something massive shifted to rapidly close to him.

The green light had disappeared and the shaking had stopped immediately after.

Numerous conversations sprung up around David as he was looking for any unusual sounds outside.

" Are we still alive?" also " Nothing happened...." and many many more.

" Well, that was anticlimactic .... " David began, just as he uttered those words something changed. His heart started beating uncontrollably, and he felt heat rising within him.

David shook his head trying to dispel the unpleasant feeling, but instead, an ache suffused his entire being. It was like an insidious toothache had suddenly gripped his entire being. He collapsed to the floor just barely keeping himself from putting his face to the floor with his arms.

Even through the incredible pain David managed to take a look around him. Everyone had collapsed, only a very few kneeled or kept their upper bodies upright.

The air around them seemed to cool, but he was still able to see all the flushed faces of everyone around him. His temperature kept climbing as well.

David''s body kept shooting more and more information to his brain about the wrongness of his internals. He could hear his blood pumping at extreme rates, and his muscles still fatigued from working out started constricting. His fingers started digging into the hard tiled floor and ripped his fingernails out.

But between the intense feeling of pain he was suffering over his complete body and the suddenly enormous awareness of his own body he wasn''t able to perceive anything else.

Cries and howls filled the gym but he barely registered them for what they were. Now all David could do was stare ahead at his own hands his head lowered down.

Just before the utter darkness of unconsciousness claimed him a gray-colored dot roughly the size of a quarter appeared on his fingers where the nails had been ripped out.
